Producer Profile: Bucci

The Bucci family have owned land in the famed Castelli di Jesi area of the Marche region as far back as the 1700s, originally inhabiting one of the ‘Castelli’ (Montecarotto) from which the DOC takes its name. Even though they have been growing and making wine for over three hundred years, it wasn’t until 1983 that the present owner Ampelio Bucci began to bottle the wine under the family name.

Located on the Adriatic coast, the Marche region has a long history of viticulture, with the two most important grape varieties being Verdicchio and Montepulciano. Undeniably the most famous area is Castelli di Jesi where Verdicchio-based wine is classified as DOC, with Riserva examples (which must be aged at least 18 months before release) being classified as DOCG.

Of the 400 hectares of land at Bucci, 26 hectares are planted to vineyards: mostly Verdicchio, with the remainder being planted to Montepulciano and Sangiovese. There are six separate vineyards, all with different levels of clay and limestone soil, and viticulture on all the estates is certified organic.

The underground cellars provide the perfect conditions for the traditional winemaking techniques followed at Bucci. Without the need for refrigeration, the wines are fermented either in stainless steel or large Slavonian oak vats. No new oak is used for the elevage, and the wines are bottled late to allow a slow evolution and integration. Bucci is a true pioneer of some of the most elegant and complex white wines in Italy, and is one of the most highly awarded producers in the country.
