Producer Profile: Il Mosnel

Il Mosnel has been producing wines since 1836, and was one of the first producers of DOC Franciacorta when the appellation was created in the 1960s. The estate was planted to Franciacorta varietals by Emanuela Barboglio, and her children - the fifth generation to inherit the land - now run the operation, along with a team of winemakers and viticulturist.

Franciacorta is often seen as Italy’s answer to Champagne; made using the ‘metodo classico’, or traditional method, it shares many similar qualities. However, ageing requirements for Franciacorta are more extended than even Champagne, resulting in wines with great intensity of lees character.

The vineyards of Il Mosnel are situated on ancient glacial deposits, located in Camignone, the central heartland of Franciacorta. All fruit is estate grown, and cultivated according to strict regulations regarding environmental conservation and protection. Vine density has recently been significantly increased, continuing the company’s pursuit of quality.

Il Mosnel’s wines are a traditional blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, vinified in stainless steel and a small percentage of new oak. After a minimum of 18 months on lees, the wines are disgorged and aged for a further minimum of six months in bottle. These are truly distinctive examples of their style.
