Producer Profile: Fiegl

The Fiegl family has cultivated vineyards in Oslavia since 1782, when Valentino Fiegl signed the bill of purchase on a vineyard called “Meja”. Since then their aim has been to transmit the unique terroir of their region, primarily through the use of indigenous varieties and traditional blends.

Soils in Gorizia are very challenging for agriculture, however the high level of mineral salts is ideal for old vines. Fiegl works with 30 hectares of vineyards with an average of 500 plants per hectare. Almost all of the viticultural work is performed manually - a necessity due to the steepness of their vineyards - with treatments kept to a reasonable minimum.

Fruit for their Villa Dugo wines comes from the Isonzo Valley, West of Oslavia. Rich soils and warmer temperatures allow for the cultivation of a wide range of varietals, without any compromise in terms of quality.

More recently the Fiegl family have made significant investments in the cellars to improve the quality of their wines. Technology and tradition are closely linked, both very important to obtain wines that are typical of Collio. Alcoholic fermentation and maturation take place predominantly in stainless steel, with some use of Slavonian oak vessels.
